Re: Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
Before anyone starts getting pedantic, that's poorly worded by me - I meant the only definite proof of Bilic doing it was Defoe. I agree it's likely he had a hand in looking at Jelavic and Tore in the past, and maybe some others. No harm in having him suggest the odd name he might know about.

Re: Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
>>> I would assume Bilic targets players and provides G&S with a list of targets and why he needs him.

I highly doubt Bilic does any of that. It's a question of practicality more than anything - how does Bilic find the time to do that? What are his scouting credentials? How does he know the sort of fees that would suit the club's budget? How does he know who's available?

The only example I know of Bilic having done anything like that is when he expressed a preference for Defoe in the January window. But that's hardly a result of a long-term commitment to assessing transfer targets - everyone and their dog knows Defoe is a good finisher. He just wanted one of those.

Much more likely the targets come out of the scouting, ie from the options that the club has found to be available. Occasionally Bilic will know them already, I'm sure (he claimed he knew Lanzini before for example). On others he may have reservations (as he did with Hogan). Mostly I'd guess he's just offered a player the club has found and says 'yes please' and occasionally 'no thanks'.

I expect what Bilic does provide is an assessment of the current squad. Who he feels is weak, where the squad could be strengthened etc. I personally feel this would be best done independently by a DoF, but given the way the club operates right now it's understandable that the manager might do it.

Sullivan likes a punt on a cheap unknown to fill out the squad. Don't really see the harm in that as long as it's not at the expense of a priority or more important signing. It's his money.

Re: Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
Sullivan does the business side of it to make it happen
He has also said previously he likes to pick out a player sometimes but I'd guess he would at least mention it to the manager if one of his choices is on the way.
If the manager doesn't want them he could use them as one of the creepy statues he has dotted about his abode.

1307 in being a dick shock!

You accuse someone of only seeing what they want to see but you do exactly the same.

Why do you follow West Ham? It clearly brings you misery and suffering.

No. I am seeing what I see. Not what I want to see. I am trying to make sense of what your point is.

But you are right you won't see any chairman being as blatant as that video. Rightly or wrongly that is Sullivan. At least he is being honest.

Russ, you are seeing what you want to see.
You won't see a chairman be as blatant as that video regarding themselves making signings from beginning to end.

Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
What?

He says he has gained experience about players in the last 20 years. But he also says they sit down together and agree targets. He was recommended Sakho and so got him watched and scouted. I am sure Sam would have known he was being watched or scouted.

And he says as Sam had not selected any other targets he wanted to go for him and Sam said ok.

I am not sure what your point is? Would you expect a chairman not be involved at all?

What do you even mean we believe what comes out of the club??

So what has come out of the club? Have the club formally announced what the process is with regard to signing players? I haven't seen or heard it so why would you suggest I 'believe what comes out the club'?

Sullivan making that comment (that I never heard so can't say whether he did or not) means nothing anyway. Yes, he signs the players. By that I assume he would mean dealing with the players club, negotiating a contract and getting the player signed.

The argument is who scouted and targeted the player first. Sullivan would not do that.

The point about Bilic is that I don't think any fan would suggest that Bilic's transfer business in the summer was good. It was poor. But I think we were caught between a rock and hard place as he was trying to add numbers to the squad as we were potentially competing in four competitions.

But when you do that it is very difficult to add numbers and quality. Many of the players brought in for the Europe League, that never happened, have been found wanting.

But, I can see the difficulty that Bilic and the club had.

Will they learn from it? We will see.

Re: Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
Wow, a lot of you seem to believe what comes out of the club.
Sullivan said on television, when he thought he had cracked it 'I sign players and it's easy. These managers are talking rubbish when they say it's hard'.

The point about Bilic hiding behind the signings was aimed as much at supporters making excuses for Bilic as Bilic himself.

Re: Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
Sullivan handles the monetary and contract side of things. Tony Henry and his team scout the players. Bilic supposedly has final approval. Between the three of them they will compile a list of players based on what positions and type of players the manager feels he needs, Sullivan will then work through them based on who they feel is priority. As Sullivan has said before very, very occasionally he may overrule the manager if he feel strongly enough (signing Tore on loan rather then perm being an example).

Well of course Sullivan makes the signings. I wouldn't expect Bilic to sit down and negotiate salary, bonus', add-on's etc etc.

I would assume Bilic targets players and provides G&S with a list of targets and why he needs him. They will discuss this and prioritise the targets. I would also assume G&S may suggest players to Bilic and the same conversation takes place.

I doubt very, very much whether G&S bring players in without Bilic agreeing first.

And, you say Bilic can't hide behind the 'not my signing' excuse. But he hasn't has he?

That deal took ages while both sides fucked about over money.

Re: Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
Bilic said his first choice of signing was Payet which he told Sullivan and was surprised when it was all wrapped up very quickly.
That's my recollection of that ANCIENT HISTORY

Vexed 11:33 Tue Feb 21
Re: Scott Hogan ? SIGNED.....for Villa.
Of the players mentioned:

Randolph: Before Bilic was manager.

Obiang signed either the day of Bilic's unveiling or the day after, which would make him a bloody quick worker.

Payet was a week or two after Bilic's arrival, was a long and protracted transfer that very likely started long before Slavs arrival.

Antonio could have been a Bilic signing as the season had already started when he rocked up but then didn't appear to rate him at all.

Lanzini's signing looks like he could be a Bilic job.

Of course he probably masterminded all these transfers before he even knew he was going to be the manager! Perhaps via his psychic?

Reckon Hogan had his hart set on coming to us and probably thought it would eventually happen.Instead ends up at a struggling club in the same division he was in.Think Brentford probably panicked a bit after we pulled out of a deal and took 12mill after demanding 15mill from us.Glad we didn't get him though.
